Dr. Michelle Emmerling, Registered Psychologist

Approach

Dr. Emmerling's therapeutic work considers individual, couple, and family issues from a holistic perspective.  She believes strongly in developing a collaborative relationship in order to create a safe place for her clients to explore and access new understandings of their experience. Clients are only asked to share as much information as you feel comfortable with. Dr. Emmerling respects the fact that in the beginning many topics are challenging to discuss and that trust can take time to develop in any type of relationship.

She believes that it is important to focus on "how" problems are produced (rather then just "why"). Dr. Emmerling's main theoretical orientation is based in humanist and emotion focused/process-experiential therapy. This means that she helps her clients to become more aware of multiple aspects of their experience (e.g., thoughts, emotions, nonverbal and verbal language), gaining greater awareness and understanding of who they are and also of their relationships. Dr. Emmerling also helps her clients to better access and identify their underlying needs and learn to communicate them more effectively to others.

Dr. Emmerling believes that each individual that she works with brings with him or her unique personal characteristics, ways of coping, beliefs, and values. Therefore, she uses interventions from multiple theoretical orientations that are tailored to the individual needs of each person. These include interventions from: emotion focused therapy for individuals and families, somatic experiencing,  mindfulness, existential-humanist therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotion Focused Therapy is Dr. emmerling's main theoretical approach to counselling that guides her interventions and how she conceptualizes each person she is working with.

EFT helps people identify which of their emotions they can trust and rely on as healthy guides and which of their emotions are the result of painful memories that are no longer useful in their current lives.

With the support and guidance of Dr. Emmerling, clients learn how to connect with feelings, memories, thoughts, and physical sensations that have been ignored, feared, and/or avoided.

By connecting with healthy grief, empowering anger, and compassion; clients are able to transform emotions such as fear, sadness of abandonment, and/or shame of inadequacy that have developed from previous learning or traumatic experiences.
